Let’s get outdoors and enjoy the deck!

deckFinally, it looks like Summer is here!  With the temperatures rising, we all want to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather!  However, does your deck look old and tired?  What can we do to quickly and inexpensively spruce up your poor deck?  Read on!

What about that deck?

Wood decks are a wonderful place to sit, relax, barbecue, read a book, the list of fun things to do there is endless.  But, maybe your deck has seen better days?  Maybe it is faded, or stained from those leaves that weren’t swept off before Winter.  Never fear!  There are really good ways to bring that tired area back to life!

Our first tip is: power wash!  If you own a power washer, or have access to one, you’re half way there!  Give that deck a good washing and get it really clean.  If you don’t have access to a power washer, your garden hose with a high pressure nozzle is next best. Followed by a good scrub with some form of cleaner and a stiff long- handled scrub brush or broom.  Make sure to sweep all the debris off first.

Ok, the deck is washed, now what?

Second, if you have mold or mildew that has persisted through your thorough washing, you can make a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts water and put that on the mold or mildew. Allow it to sit on the affected areas for at least five minutes.  Those stubborn areas may need up to fifteen minutes to get clean.

And when the deck is clean and dry, you can move on.  Stain it or paint it or just put new water sealer on.  No matter which you choose, be sure to put some water sealer on it for best long lasting results.

Now go outside and enjoy the sunshine!
